Recent articles at better business bureau, scam busters dot org and the fiscal times dot com state that there are 2 new scams that telemarketers and scammers are using. The first new scam is that they are using the phone numbers of regular people, especially people in small businesses. They are spoofing those numbers knowing that these are not numbers likely to show up on the compiled lists of spoofed numbers that people check when strange phone calls come in. The idea is that is they spoof the phone numbers of regular people, the householder will be more likely to pick up the phone. That would explain why we and many other people have been receiving tons of phone calls from local florists, day care centers, businesses in Tampa, FL and believe it or not, really old people in mobile home parks. The other scam is just as insidious. The scammers and telemarketers are spoofing the phone numbers of the householders, themselves. The objective is for the householder to be so shocked or curious that his/her phone number has shown up in the caller ID, that they will pick up the phone. Better Business Bureau warns against picking up, but says that if you do, do not press any buttons that you are instructed to press by a person or by a recording. If you miss the call, do not call your number back. These scams are happening all over the country but the BBB article is from Central East Texas and is avail to read online as are the articles from scam busters and the fiscal times.
