recent articles at better business bureau, scam busters dot com and the fiscal times dot com, indicate that there is a NEW SCAM that telemarketers and scammers are using. They are now using the SPOOFED NUMBERS OF REGULAR PEOPLE.....pretty much
anyone who has a telephone. The numbers belong to people who own small businesses,
usual local, friends, neighbors, etc. The articles state that householders now go
to websites which give lists of spoofed numbers and then do not pick up when they
see those numbers on their caller ID. By using the spoofed numbers of regular people, the scammers are hoping that the householder will pick up the phone. Another
NEW SCAM is to use the householder's own phone number. The articles state that the
scamamers hope that the shock of seeing one's own phone number calling them in the
caller ID will be enough for them to pick up the phone out of curiousity. The
better business bureau article came from Central East Texas. It warns against
picking up the phone but if you do pick up, it advises not to press any buttons
that the recorded message or individual might tell you to press and do not call
the number back if you did not pick up at the time the call came in. Do not give
out any identifying information to the supposed caller.
