I just had a variation on this scam today but it was even more insidious. I called a Sprint customer service number listed on their web site, but somehow the call must have been re-routed or high jacked because the person who answered in response to the menu choice I gave said this was my lucky day and I had won a $100 Walmart gift card and some other stuff. She asked for credit card information to cover shipping & handling and when I asked why they just couldn't put it on my Sprint bill since this was a Sprint number she gave a lame excuse and insisted on a number to use for the card. I stupidly gave the number as I still thought this was Sprint since that was the number I had called but after she said I had to talk to a verification person and he came on the line, I asked again why I couldn't just bill it to my Sprint account. He got said they were a separate company named Creative solutions and when I asked more questions got very rude. When I said I called a number on the Sprint web site and asked how I got sidetracked to them he said that I couldn't have been calling sprint and must have mis-dialed. Meanwhile i was looking at the history of numbers called on my phone and the number on the web site at the same time and they were the same. The man was basically yelling at me at this point so i hung up. My next call was to my bank to cancel the card I had used. I'm more than a little appalled that they were able to high jack a legitimate phone number and transfer me that way to a scammer. Now you can't even trust people YOU call let alone people who call you!
