As a tech who has to fix the damage done by these people, I can most assuredly tell you they are out for your personal info. Most sound very genuine when they call. Windows based computers often generate errors that you never see because Windows takes care of them without your help. There is a log of these errors and the callers "show" you these errors "proving" they are there to help. NEVER allow them to take control of your computer.
As to Microsoft, they have literally billions of computers with one of their operating systems. There is no way they could or would single you out, find your phone number and then call you. They have their money and have no need to call you. Hang up on these thieves and block their number from your phone. Warn people around you that this scam is going on and to do the same thing, hang up and block the number.

I received a call from this number, it took a few seconds for me to hear anything at all, but I heard it switch over so I figured it was an international call. And then the only thing I heard was background static and the computerized voice saying goodbye. When I called the number back, I received a recording dating that the number was disconnected or no longer in service. Why are these people allowed to operate this way?

Received a call stating that they received a notice that my computer or laptop had virus on Microsoft that needs to be fix and they can help me with that. I asked them how is that possible when my computer is at geek squad getting fix so could that be the problem, but the person was quick to say Okay thank you and hung up.
