They're making the rounds this week then. Got a call from the same place about the same kind of debt I never had.
Let them file a 1099-C. According to irs.gov that's a forgiveness of debt form. They can't file it, you'd have to, so they'd be committing tax fraud against you.
Caller refused to provide their name - turned them in to the Do Not Call site. Maybe I'll be able to get my $11,000 from it :P

Bogus collection / lawsuit threat regarding a credit card I never had.
They threatened to sue, file a 1099-C and ruin my credit.
They said I owed $5500, but they would accept $3000 if I agreed to settle. I refused, of course.
At that point they said they would be filing suit and I had better consult my attorney. I wished them luck.

They've been harassing me all day - pried a name out of the guy: Phillip. I proceeded to file a complain with the FTC via the donotcall.gov website. I'd suggest everyone else do the same.
