Just received a call from them saying their company purchases debts from collection agencies and that they have a judgement against me. They are way saying this is in regards to a credit card I had back in 2008 which had a credit limit of $250.00 in which I could only use $50.00. They are now saying I owe over $2,000.00. I received a call a couple months ago, which is says was from the company that had this debt before his office purchased it, and they told me that I owed around $500.00 or $600.00. How can the amount owed jump that high in just 2 months? When I spoke with that company 2 months ago, they said I could only pay half or the full amount and wouldn't accept any other payment arrangements. I had literally just started a job I had been at for 1 week and was more than willing to set something up to get it resolved when I got my first pay check but they wouldn't accept that. So I explained this to the people at this Colonial Asset Management place that called me today and they said since this case was in their hands now I owed over $2,000.00 and that they would only accept at minimum, a payment of $200.00 per month until it's paid off to keep it out of court. I informed them that I no longer was employed and that amount was way too high for me to pay but they wouldn't accept anything less. He then said they would rather get a judgement against me and take me to court rather than set up a payment that was more reasonable to me. I asked them why they would rather take this to court than to set up something more reasonable when a payments arrangement is what is going to be set up by the judge anyway and his response was that they would just rather take me to court unless I pay $200.00 per month. My opinion, which I definitely made him aware of, was that they (if they are who they say they are) purchase these debts and make their minimum payment so outrageous knowing the person cannot afford that amount just to take them to court to get all the extra fees and penalties.
