2 days ago I received a robo call at 6pm stating the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me and I needed to call 206-806-8011 immediately. I called back an hour later. It
sounded like a call center with lots of background noise.
I was asked for my name and address, which I gave. However, when I was asked for my dob I questioned why he did not have that info already. I was told that he needed it to access my file.
I responded that I was going to call an official IRS phone before I gave him any more info. I then checked the Reverse Directory and found that the number was an unlisted one in Seattle, Washington.
I again called the Seattle number and got a woman. I told her I looked the number up and it was not registered to the IRS. She said if I didn't believe them, then I shouldn't call back. When I told her that impersonating an IRS agent was probably a federal crime, she hung up.
I started reading on the Internet about scams and this sounded like one. The next day I called the Washington number again and got the same man I talked to the night before...what are the odds.
This time I asked for his name and ID number, and why the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me. I was told it was an audit of my tax returns for 2008-2013. This time he was able to access my file without me giving him any further info!
He told me I owed the IRS $4000 which had to be paid immediately or a warrant would be issued for my arrest. I told him I know I owed the IRS about $3000 and that I was on an installment plan collected directly thru my bank. He said the collection branch would not know that I was being audited so I should discontinue paying via electronic withdrawal and had to pay his office.
I told him I could not afford to pay the entire amount and he became angry and told me to get a criminal lawyer. When I asked what specific issues I was being audited for, he said "everything".
I've heard you are usually audited a about specific deductions such as medical costs, contributions, etc, and this did not seem reasonable. When I told this man I was going to contact the IRS via an official number he said I'd better do it fast before I was arrested.
I am 99.9% sure that this was a scam. But I want to check and see if I am being audited and what I have to do. How can I get in touch with the IRS audit dept?

3-18-15 We just received an automated (although it clearly wasn't) call from someone stating they worked for the IRS Tax & Audit Department and we needed to call or our attorney within 24 hours or re our tax fraud. He sounded vicious and mean. The number to reply was 702-828-0419. It's ludicrous. How did they get our number?

This "puke" or automated machine, just let a message stating that he was from the IRS Tax Audit Department and that he is calling about some sort of "tax fraud" that I need to call back immediately due to a lawsuit being filed against me and that an arrest warrant will be issued ASAP. The number that came up was 1 202 629 0964 and that is the phone number he (or it) specified I call back.
I honestly believe this could cause some folks who might not know about this kind of stuff, some real serious grief. Now why in the hell can't these people get busted? People like this make me sick. Praying on the elderly, less informed, of just simple honest people that want to make sure they do right in life.
Damn parasites...

What can be done?
