1. What is a 1099-C?
A 1099-C reports Cancellation of Debt Income (CODI). A lender is supposed to file a 1099-C form if it “cancels” $600 or more in debt. It files a copy with the IRS and is required to send a copy to the taxpayer as well. Four common reasons for filing a 1099-C are:
You negotiated a settlement to pay a debt for less than the amount you owed and the creditor forgave the rest;
You owned a home that went into foreclosure and there was a deficiency (a difference between the home’s value and what you owed on it) which was either forgiven or remains unpaid;
You sold a home in a “short sale” where the lender agreed to accept less than the full balance due; or
You did not pay anything on a debt for at least three years and there has been no significant collection activity for the past 12 months.

Called business line, I did not answer, they did not leave a message. I called the number back and a recording came on that said "Hi this is Jake with Direct TV I want to talk to the business owners regarding saving you...." I hung up at that point. So unless you are interested in getting Direct TV at your business you can ignore calls from this number.

Received what appeared to be an invoice from this company. I called and left them a message so when Jake called me back I asked him what this was. He kept explaining the service and asking if I wanted it and I told him no, which confirmed that no one from my company had asked for this service. He told me to disregard it and that he couldn't send me a credit invoice because he didn't show a balance. I asked how this could have happened and he said maybe thru an affiliate. There are several complaints online thru other links that this is happening to a lot of companies.

This was supposedly a debt collection service for a hospital. I haven't been in the hospital for over 10 years and for sure don't owe any money. They didn't know specifics about my account other than it was "overdue" and needed immediate payment. Ughhh

Wanted to warn me that they were shutting off my computer access because I have a bogus Windows 7 copy. I needed to pay them right away. Wow! I don't even run a Windows 7 PC, have 2 on the shelf but I don't use them :) (I'm still in the XP world by choice)
